Words To Live By

edited July 2018 in General
Hello lovely people!

I thought it might be fun to share a quote, phrase, or word of wisdom, which you live by, find insightful, inspiring, funny or has affected a  decision you've made!

For me, the saying that has stuck with me the very most was from my grandfather and he told me:

"You can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."

If you have one don't hesitate to share it! =^.^=

    There are 3 main quotes that I have used over the years. There are other quotes I love and could mention but these 3 are ones that have stuck out to me the most.
    __________

    (This first one I basically started saying a long time ago. Yes, I wrote it but I can't take credit for it. I give credit to God for the inspiration.)

    Quote #1: "Balance is important both in life and art"
    __________

    (This next quote I got from the movie "Love Comes Softy" and it has really stuck with me. If you have never seen the movie and are looking for a good quality movie recommendation, I totally recommend that movie.)

    Quote #2: "The truth of God's love is not in whether or not he allows bad things to happen, it lies in the truth of His promise that He will be there for us when they do happen."
    __________

    (The last quote I came across through social media in a meme but it has so much truth in it. It basically means that whatever trial or tribulation you are going through in life at the moment, the storm WILL come to an end eventually because no storm in life lasts forever.)

    Quote #3: "Everything will be alright in the end. If it is not alright, then it is not the end yet.)
    __________

  • My English teacher in High School made us memorize this poem and tasked us to recite it with her at the beginning of her every class. She will not start teaching unless we do this extra step.

    As a teenager I found it annoying. We would spend less than 5 minutes reciting this every single time before she would teach us. And she urged us to memorize it and read between the lines. At first, we would all mouth the words, hardly memorize it and look at our paper. Even giggle if we say a wrong word.

    The next weeks, we had it memorized by heart.

    Little did I know, this poem will be stuck with me and I'm happy to always look back and be engrossed in it again and again.

    This poem is so rich and so full of wisdom. It is inspiring and it holds so much truth.

    The poem is "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann, written in 1927. Desiderata is Latin for "things desired."

    He has written countless others, all awe-inspiring so he's definitely one of my favorite poets of all time.

    I hope this poem stirs you as well. :)

    Desiderata

    Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
    and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible without surrender
    be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even the dull and the ignorant;
    they too have their story.

    Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
    they are vexations to the spirit.
    If you compare yourself with others,
    you may become vain and bitter;
    for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

    Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
    it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
    Exercise caution in your business affairs;
    for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
    many persons strive for high ideals;
    and everywhere life is full of heroism.

    Be yourself.
    Especially, do not feign affection.
    Neither be cynical about love;
    for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
    it is as perennial as the grass.

    Take kindly the counsel of the years,
    gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
    But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
    Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
    Beyond a wholesome discipline,
    be gentle with yourself.

    You are a child of the universe,
    no less than the trees and the stars;
    you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you,
    no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

    Therefore be at peace with God,
    whatever you conceive Him to be,
    and whatever your labors and aspirations,
    in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

    With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
    it is still a beautiful world.
    Be cheerful.
    Strive to be happy.

    I really love this quote:

    "Just a reminder in case your mind is playing tricks on you today: You matter. You’re important. You’re loved. And your presence on this earth makes a difference, whether you see it or not."

    Also @waterfallglow I have seen love comes softly and I love that part too!! I also love when dale Midkiff says right before that quote that "Missy could fall down and hurt herself, even if I'm walking right there beside her. That doesn't mean that I allowed it to happen. She knows, as far as unconditional love, I'll pick her up and I'll carry her. I'll try to heal her. I'll cry when she cries. And I'll rejoice when she is well. In all the moments of my life, God has been right there beside me."

    Also @GIFT love your qoutes!

    Ohhhh, that is so awesome you have seen that movie too! It is such a good quality and beautiful movie! Also, yes, I really liked that part of the quote as well. I guess the last part of it (the part I quoted in my first post), was the part I remembered the most and stuck with me the most. Not fully sure why? The entire thing he says though is good too. Thank you for sharing it in it's entirety and reminding me of that part of it. :)
