    How do I solve the chess puzzle?

    look in the chess book until you a circles chess puzzle.  then you take the letter that all the chess pieces are on and put them together, starting with 1 it shoudl be this in the end:

    Not really, I also found a letter, Left, Cobras, Right, Stair Paintings, Left, Chess 52 black, Right, Foyer Windows, and it looks like the globe's some sort of safe!

    That's right!  you need to turn the top of the globe, left how many cobras you have, so 4, and then right how many pantings are on the wall going up the stairs, and so on!
