FULL DETAILED VERSION 

return to lodge ;  call aunt  go to porch talk to man,  (alex) ,

 

go to boat house check papers for who he was talking about  flip papers

return to boat dock get in boat talk to man in boat on lake (JA PACKARD) Notice when done talking to him your boat is facing back to lodge

go back to lodge talk to Alex again he wants more donuts , make him a donut and return to talk to him again

leave lodge and go to island , notice when walking through forest from boat dock , there is a bush that moves , look there  find chess pieces

store chess pieces in inventory go back to cabin

go talk to anne at cabin

look around library for book on chess over by ladder  and place chess pieces on game correct order see help from chess book . ( notice king is missing) SEE PICTURE BELOW

go back and talk to anne she will tell you about false book , go to end table at end of sofa read letter and put snake in inventory

go back and talk to annie and she will tell you about fairy books each having different  color find them

red blue  fairy book found in bookcase left of entry door in library 

 green fairy book found over in bookcase where u had to put books in order

yellow fairy book by bookcase where world globe is

go over by window box and place in  this order the wooden animal figures

mouse snake mongoose bird

says window box is open ......end of chapter

SHORT QUICK VERSION ALL STEPS HERE MUST BE COMPLETED

ok figured out a readers digest shorter version to get through with help from a friend 

can skip allot of steps and still finish ( I tested with two clones to be sure)

ACTIONS THAT MUST BE DONE TO FINISH CHAPTER

take boat to lodge , on way talk to guy in boat

go back to lodge : talk to ALEX completely including making him a donut and completing conversation.

go to boat house , read paper , and flip it so can read other side

go back to island and cousin's cabin , coming from dock to cabin about six screens in check the bushes for stolen chess pieces ( bush does move and hear rustle sound)

once back in cabin , put chess pieces in correct order 

talk to anne but only ask how she is doing with books ( skip the rest of conversation)  , she should reply about finding the false book , 

go over to end table by sofa with lamp, letter and snake on it  . read letter , store snake

go over to window box and place wooden animals in correct order 

mouse, snake , mongoose and bird 

says its open

What do you mean by the end table and red sofa. I'm stuck on the letter and snake part.

I completed all the tasks including placing the chess pieces correctly.  However, when I go back and talk to Jane, she doesn't say anything about a fake book.  Also, there is no letter or snake on the end table.  Any help would be appreciated. By the way, it did the same exact thing with my clone.

Hi @PurplePolarSage :)

My friend ran into that same problem, what you need to do is:

Go  back over to the lodge and talk to Alex

If you've already talked to Alex, be sure you've given him a donut and talked to him AGAIN :)

Look at the newspapers in the boathouse

Make sure you've also talked to Packard in the boat

With Alex, you have to ask him what color the boat was, then you can go back to the island and do the fairy books, etc.  I had to go back over a couple times to get to that one question, then it all worked for me on the island.
