Possible glitch - can’t open chemical cabinet

I’ve found the invisible combination on the piece of paper (that unlocks the chandelier elevator) and recovered the Rikki Tikki Tavi book. Now I’m trying to reveal the formula in the book using the same method as before but can’t seem to unlock the chemical cabinet. My mouse icon turns red over it, but when I click nothing happens. How can I proceed?

I did put the book there (thank you!) but it still isn’t letting me get more chemicals from the medicine cabinet back in the secret lab.

I have the blue and pink chemical bottles in my inventory but the game won’t let me mix them, either.
